Ukraine has announced the development of the new Shershen air defense system, a multicaliber platform designed to operate with different types of missiles.

According to the specialized outlet Militarnyi, the equipment has already been tested with five distinct models, including Soviet-era weapons, foreign versions, and Ukrainian projects currently under development.

The project is being led by a company linked to the National Association of Defense Industries of Ukraine (NAUDI), in cooperation with firms responsible for guidance systems, control, radars, and launcher integration. The main idea is to allow a single launcher to use missiles of different calibers, expanding the operational flexibility of the armed forces.

Among the weapons tested are two R-27 missiles, known in NATO as AA-10 Alamo, originally developed as air-to-air missiles and later adapted for ground-based air defense. Images released show the launcher equipped with this ammunition, highlighting the system’s ability to integrate existing weapons into the new project.

The initiative comes amid a shortage of missiles faced by Ukraine due to large-scale Russian air attacks. As current systems depend on specific suppliers, the lack of compatible ammunition has left some launchers inactive. With Shershen, Kyiv aims to reduce this dependence, diversify supply sources, and expand available stock to face ongoing bombardments.
